Music - Taking Over the World

January 1999 saw the release of her debut album ...Baby One More Time which went straight in at number one on the U.S Billboard 200 and was certified two-times platinum after only one month. To date, it has sold more than thirty million copies worldwide making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

The title track was to be the lead single from the album and what a good choice it was! It sold 500,000 copies on day one, peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and also topped the singles chart for two weeks in the UK. Jive, the record company, had the initial idea of the accompanying music video being animated - but Britney declined and instead suggested the idea of a schoolgirl, an iconic late 90s image.

Sometimes was the second single released from the album and whilst it was still hugely successful it only reached number twenty-one on the Billboard Hot 100.

The third single from the album was You Drive Me Crazy which had fans going wild once more, and became a top-ten hit worldwide. Sales of Baby One More Time also felt the effects and were propelled higher once again.

The next two singles to be released form the album, Born to Make You Happy and From the Bottom of My Broken Heart received mixed reviews from critics but still earned great success ,with the latter being certified platinum.

In the year 2000, the pressure was on as Britney released her second studio album Oops!... I did It Again. She herself actually considered this album to be better than Baby One More Time as it was edgier, had more attitude and she felt was more suited to her vocal talents.

As before, the title track was to be the lead single and became Britney’s third top ten single, peaking at number nine. It also became Britney’s third UK number one after Baby One More Time and Born to Make You Happy.

The next singles to be released from the album were Lucky, Stronger and Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know, with Stronger being the most successful of the three. Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know amazingly failed to make the Hot 100!

Although the singles didn’t appear to have been too successful with the buying public, the album and the title track received Grammy nominations - the former for Best Pop Vocal Album and the latter Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The album has since sold over twenty-five million copies worldwide.

Despite its huge success, amazingly Jive considered Oops... I did It Again to be a bit of a disappointment when compared with Baby One More Time.
